Carol - Zeph made dirty rice for lunch for everybody. i laid down some keyboard parts. rode Dan’s bike around their backyard in circles like a hamster in a wheel. i must’ve done over a hundred laps. painted Todd P’s nails. last night we were sitting around watching the ‘essence of emeril’ on food network with Daniel, a friend of Dan and Todd’s and daniel revealed how he loves emeril and he loves to cook. so we made a dinner date for today at his place. when we went over to his house there were freshly pressed pasta hung on wire coat hangers all over the kitchen. quite a sight. the food was awesome. he just went all out and baked bread even. the sucky thing was that all of sudden my feet and ankles were covered with pimply mosquito bites and i had to leave his house immediately. it was such a drag. i HATE mosquitoes. Todd and Mikie went to a bar looking for girls at night. but they didn’t find any.
Thursday, June 26 1997 Norman OK Tips Tavern w/the Duelists
Zeph - This one was a real disappointment. Our friends were there and we still made good money but it was the first time we’d had less people than the previous show in Oklahoma and we didn’t play so well. We had a good time at Dan and Todd’s house afterwards. People came over and drank whisky and fucked under the clothesline. Dan’s ex-girlfriend puked on the porch right next to me. The next morning we left for Austin, seizing an opportunity to drive away without paying for $40 worth of gas.
Todd - Mikey and I thought the show was great, but the rest of the band felt let down compared to previous Norman shows. We had an after party and Dan and Todd’s. Carol got me stoned, which is NEVER a good idea (I am known to forget how to breathe and things like that). Mikey banged some girl in her car in the front of the house. I don’t remember much else… something about masturbation, but I don’t have confirmation so will not be committing that story to the historical record.
C - i got drunk early on in the day and did some singing on “you ain’t no lady’s man.” our norman show this time was the weakest by far of all the shows we’ve done here. it was weird but to be expected. the club only had bud on tap and no ice, not to mention any hard liquor. we made trips back and forth to the van to fill up our cups with evan williams. we played well. there was a party after the show over at the house as usual. i hung out with Dan’s ex, Kuri mostly. she’s actually pretty cool. i got Todd P stoned and it was funny. Matt hid himself in the studio/garage trying to get some last minute work done. i dared Mikie to go find himself a girl and he did.
Friday, June 27 1997 Austin TX Emo’s
Z - As usual Justin and Margaret took good care of us with food and drinks but it was a bad night. Bad vibes. The band that played after us was unbelievably awful and I stood up front heckling them loud enough for Mikey to hear me on the back patio. Some muscular friends of theirs threatened to kick my ass if I didn’t leave right away so I did. We drove that night to El Paso to avoid the heat in the desert.
C - we listened to the shit we’ve been emitting for the past 4-5 days this morning before we left Dan and Todd’s and it sounded pretty awesome. it was fuckin hot on the way to austin. this is texas in the middle of june and we have no ac in the van. you get the picture. we played with this awful 3 piece girl punk/trash/metal band. our set was so-so. the highlight of this austin show was seeing Scott, who we had met in Seattle on the last tour. it was so cool to see him. he’s going down to south america for six months. Mary the girl we stayed with 2 tours ago came down. she told me that i left my glasses at her apartment but she doesn’t know where they are now since she stored all her shit. she acted defensive. maybe she thought i was mad at her. anyway, i forgot to get her phone # in case they turned up. Matt, Todd and i went to denny’s for late night supper. Zeph and Mikie almost got into a fight with the guys from the other band at the club cuz i guess one of’em was dissing Matt behind his back.
T - The drive to Austin was way too hot and I was starting to remember why I didn’t miss touring in vans much (my last 5 years of touring had been in buses with a pop singer). I was looking forward to Emos, usually a good time, until tonight. I tried to get in touch with Julie Mercer, an old friend of mine from the Bullet LaVolta tours, but I couldn’t find her. The bands we played with were horrific and we were off of our game. After the set, Matt, Carol and I went to Denny’s. When we went back to pick up Mikey and Zeph, we learned that some shit had gone down. Bad vibes everywhere, so we decided to head to El Paso undercover of the night. I do not remember much about this drive. I think Carol and I crashed in the loft bed together and I wondered if Matt was cool with that.
