Tuesday, July 1 1997 Los Angeles CA Spaceland

Matt - Our last show in LA. It had been a great couple of days and I really like LA after this. I thought that things were really gonna turn around for us, and I would get some recognition as this great and unique songwriter by all the right people. My head was held up higher. I didn’t know any better.

Todd - Things truly felt like we were leaving a good impression on the city.  Spaceland was filled with cats in the know who had heard about the Garage show.  We played really well as we were feeling the buzz around town.  I met up with a girl that I had met in London on a Bullet LaVolta tour 8 years prior.  She did dirty things to me in the band van and promptly disappeared (boyfriend at home, I think).  We crashed at Vista, victorious and full of hope.

Zeph - Mikey went out to lunch with some rock stars and brought me back left-over sushi. Gordon and Wampus came down again and Julie and everyone went out to dinner. Some kids from Boston were there on vacation. They looked like they were there to see Slapshot. They gave us a broken yo-yo. After we played I had 4 or 5 double Jim Beams and got in the van for the drive up to San Francisco. Mikey stayed behind. He was flying up to Portland for the next show.

Carol - Matt, Rob, Todd, and i drove over to the other side of hollywood for brunch at this cute fast japanese place. it was really cheap but good. then we drove around and found exene cervanka's "you've got bad taste." it's a fun campy store/museum. i saw the white dress blondie wore on the cover of parallel lines. john the guy who worked there had seen us at sucker the other night and he really liked us. i got some wonder woman stickies. Wampus from norman who now lives here and his friend, Gordon came and took us to this mexican joint for a drink before the show, supposedly dolly parton's favorite mexican restaurant. i met Rob's friend Chris and he give me a tiny bit of pot. our spaceland show was pretty cool. Gordon took some cool polaroids of us playing. this really drunk woman came up to me after the show and asked me if i was interested in being in gen-x commercials cuz she can make it happen. she gave me her card. over all we had a great time in la. we left very late without Mikie. it was sad to leave Rob who's been so hospitable to us.

Z - I woke up in the van at dawn and Todd was driving. I took over from him and we got some McDonald’s breakfast. It was a warm day with one less body in the van. We got to San Fran and dropped off Todd at a hotel he said was for real rock stars. Carol and Matt and I had to go to New Age Storage and get the rest of our shit that we’d left behind a little over a year ago. We spent all day baking in the sun in this industrial park sorting through our stuff on the sidewalk and trying to pack it all into the van. We threw a lot of stuff away and we were still packed in about as tight as we all could be. We went to the mission to get food and at around sundown headed over to Carol’s ex-roommate Daniel’s house at 335 Oak. I passed out in the van and woke up three hours later when we were picking up Todd and heading for Oregon.

M - Carol and I had lived in San Francisco for the years between 1994 and 1996. When we left SF last year, we put a bunch of stuff in storage, not sure if we were gonna make it back to live there or not. I guess we had given up on that idea. Todd P wasn’t too thrilled at all the new shit stuffed into every corner of the van, and made his feelings known. My attitude was that if he didn’t like it, he could lump it.

C - our day off in sf. dropped todd off at the phoenix where he’s gonna hook up with his date for the day and me, Matt and Zeph drove to new age storage to get our stuff out. we spent all day sorting through the stuff and throwing out a lot of shit we just got back. i realized how much trash i had stored and been paying for it. my back got totally sun burnt from sitting out on the side walk and the storage guy insisted on putting this shit on my back for remedy. i can’t believe i let him cuz that stuff was nasty. we practically turned the van inside out in order to jam everything in there including the gear. got some burrito in the mission and drove over to the oak street apartment where i used to live. Arthur now lived in my old room with his girlfriend Maximilia and Daniel’s girlfriend was visiting from austin. Matt and i hung out there while Zeph slept in the van. the whole thing was too strange for words. we watched royal trux video they taped in santa cruz at some festival and fell asleep. Zeph got us up around 4 am. we picked up Todd and left sf. it was all too weird but i’m glad i was too tired to think about it.
