Chevy Heston 1986-1998

tour 1.02

Thursday, February 1 1996 NY, NY CBGB’s

Matt - At least we got to eat some pizza. We played at 7:30. It was like a pretend gig. Colin Decker, who worked on our last two records, his band Car (now Lincolnville) was in town to do a show and so at least they were there. After our show we drove to Nyack to get a motel. More credit card squeezing.

Zeph - It was fucking freezing cold.

Friday, February 2 1996 NY, NY Brownies

M - Snowing. All we could do was hang-out backstage in a little cubby space. These clubs in NY do not serve the bands alcohol, unless you draw a crowd. Nobody gave a shit. Maybe if someone would’ve shit on the floor, I don’t know. It was snowing really hard and it took me 2 1/2 hours to drive to Nyack.

Z - Nyack is ugly and miserable. It was cold and wet and we were all depressed.

Saturday, February 3 1996 Philadelphia PA Khyber Pass

M- Whoa. We got there early to drink. And the bar was generous which was a relief after the New York bars. Winston, Zeph, and myself played Risk all afternoon. We had a pretty good crowd there to party and see the other bands. We opened for Solution AD and this stupid band Liquid Gang. Both bands looked the same though. They were so annoying. Winston picked up one bands’ bass head, I couldn’t tell which one because both groups looked so much alike, and they came running out to the van to get it and we apologized. None of us were into stealing that much, but those bands had all the attitude but no inspiration so when he took it, we just didn’t know what to say. They looked so tired onstage. We were soooo hungry that night that we snuck a few platters of deli meat and booze into our stuff. But then we got paid a little dough and we drove out to the airport to get a motel room and we spent all of our money on the room and at Denny’s. Though none of us could really finish our meals because we had been so hungry for a few days that our stomachs had shrunk. We found out a week later from our label that we were banned from the club forever for “spending more time in the refrigerator than rocking out on stage.”

W - It had been a dark, disappointing past few days. Downtown was gray and empty in the afternoon. Revolution sounded like a good idea.

Z - None of us had eaten in over a day. These two local bands got deli platters and we got nothing but drinks. We played great. The crowd was into it. Khyber is small and my drum cases were way in the back in the old kitchen. I could hear the fridge running so I opened it up and took a big head of roast beef (about two pounds) another half head of turkey and a big block of cheese. I put it all in my kick drum and showed Winston. I think that’s what got him goin’. Or maybe it was when I showed him the gin and the whiskey and the bottle of this expensive looking Belgian shit. Later at Denny’s ,Matt, who doesn’t eat cows, ordered the chicken fried steak thinking it was chicken.

Sunday, February 4 1996 NY, NY Mercury Lounge

W - Some people came in, sat down, and watched the first band. When they finished they got up and left, and a new group of people sat down to watch the next band, and so on. It was silly.

M - The last of our NY shows. We did get drunk off of the booze from Philly and I think that Winston’s girlfriend bought us a few drinks. We were drunk and played well, but New York was sucking. We only knew a few people in New York, and they were there. A guy who later become a close friend, David Hochbaum was one of 5 people in the audience.

Z - We played great but it didn’t mean shit to those people. We didn’t draw enough at the door and the promoter told me not to call her again.
