Chevy Heston 1986-1998

tour 3.12

Saturday, June 8 1996 Auburn, AL Daytime party

Matt - There was no way we could have entertained this crowd. Auburn is a conservative football town in a really beautiful part of the South, but we shouldn’t be playing an afternoon party there to a handfull of straights. The band was actually starting to get better. Roman brought some true joy into the mix.

Roman got harassed by the local police, of course. Just for being in a grocery store.

Monday, June 10 1996 Atlanta GA MJQ

Zeph - We especially don’t do well in the southeast. Ashley lured 5 or 6 of her friends out and that was about it besides us and the staff. No other bands. No DJ. No sound person. No one cared. It was raining.

M - I was psyched about this night for some reason. I even smoked a little pot before we played. But we played and it was typical bad. A random guy started talking to me afterwards and kept showing me some pills in a bottle and asked me if I wanted to take any. Uh.. no. The place we crashed had on South Park, and I had never seen or heard of that before.

Wednesday, June 12 1996 Chapel Hill NC Local 506

Z - All of the 506 shows just blend together and still don’t add up to one good night.

Thursday, June 13 1996 Richmond VA Twisters

Z - I can’t remember but I’m sure it must have sucked.

M - I was pretty fucking exhausted. But thinking mostly about going into the studio to make the next record very soon. Getting nervous and excited.

Friday, June 14 1996 Morgantown WV Nyabinghi

Z- The van had been running like shit all day because of what turned out to be a dying fuel-pump. Sputtering, lurching, no power going up hills, feeling like it was gonna die at any moment. Most of the drive was winding mountain highways and it was a beautiful day to appreciate it. It made the 10mph uphill climbs enjoyable if you could forget about possibly missing another show, being stuck out here, having no money. But we got there ok. Things run very late at the Nyabinghi. We got there and drank the real top-shelf shit as usual. We played a great set but no one was there and Greg generously paid us $100 plus a $150 loan for some studio expenses.

Saturday, June 15 1996 Boston MA the Rat

Z - We spent most of the day in Connecticut stranded on the side of the highway. We got towed. Sat in a bar next to the shop for a couple hours of hours and played some pool, a couple of us had some drinks. The guy comes out of the shop and tells us it’s dead and we owe him 80 bucks or something so we say we don’t have it even though it’s a lie but we stick to our story and the argument gets heated up enough for the cops to get called and two or three cruisers show up and we pay the guy. The van got going again and we made it to the Rat about an hour before our set. This time we had called and things turned out ok. It was my 26th birthday.
