Saturday, November 2 1997 Los Angeles CA Sucker
Zeph - We played with this shit band from Norway who really thought they were great and played for so long we were left with 15 minutes to set up, play and get off before the rock club ended and the reggae club began. We played about 3 songs and had these dreadlock dudes with too much cologne on hauling our shit into the alley for us. It was terrible. We stayed at Carol’s friend Rob’s house and the next day Matt and I went over to No Life to see Chuck and then over to Gordon and Wompus’. Gordon gave us a Woody Guthrie tape. We picked up Carol and left LA at around 8pm heading for Salt Lake. Got into Vegas at 2am and the van was running poorly. We gave ourselves 2 bucks apiece to gamble with and headed over to New York, New York to hit the nickel slots. Blew our cash, got some buffet food and were back on the road for about a half hour before we had to pull over at one of those Casino rest-stops because of engine trouble. The sun was coming up and we spent the rest of our cash on the buffet breakfast and played a couple more bucks on slots. Called Cherrydisc trying to get Horton to send us some money but no luck. Ended up getting a Western Union from loved ones back home. After the van sat for an hour or so it got rolling again and I had a good time driving through Utah with Carol and Matt sleeping.
Carol - la wasn’t as much fun as last time but it’s still good to be here cuz i get to see Rob. i guess our show sucked but Rob and i took some valium Daniel gave me and had a groovy time. i talked to the keyboardist dude from the norwegian band. i guess he thinks his band’s really awesome but they’re really a cover band. they did a 20-minute ‘hey jude’ among other obvious ones. we left la to stop at vegas on the way to salt lake. i wanted Rob to come too but he chose not to in the end.
Sunday, November 3 1997 Mesquite, NV
C - matt drove and we got there around 4 in the morning. zeph was asleep and he wanted us to find a 24-hr pawn shop where we could pawn some of his drums, this being vegas and all. but oddly enough, contrary to our predicament, we didn’t find a pawn shop that was still open. upon giving up we decided to try our luck at the new ny, ny casino. no luck, no draw, no nothing. i went back to the van and fell asleep and woke up, found myself in the parking lot of a diffrent casino. this time it was oasis in mesquite, NV. matt and zeph already had the breakfast buffet. i checked it out and found that i didn’t want anything there and it was way over-priced for casino buffet. so i went and got an egg ‘n cheese mcmuffin. it was almost 11 so it was dry and rubbery.
Monday, November 4 1997 Salt Lake City UT Burt’s
Z - We always do two sets at Burt’s. Tonight Leif from surly played drums with us on a bunch of Destroy songs for the second set. Later we found out that his dad is the world yo-yo champion.
C - i found out that the soup i love so much actually has beef stock. i was crushed. they shouldn’t list it under vegetarian on the menu.
Tuesday, November 5 1997 Denver CO Lion’s Lair w/The Ted Bundy Band
Z - Since we got all that speed here it’ll probably always be fun to come back to this place and play with TBB. Their singer gave Carol his cowboy hat.
C - i got a cowboy hat from the singer from the ted bundy band. we went over to carrie’s after show. it was very sweet of her to let us crash there. matt and i tried to watch back beat but it was so bad we fell asleep. it was either that or the legend of the fall.
Wednesday, November 6 1997 Wichita KS Kirby’s II
Z - This was miserable. Old alcoholics either yelling for us to turn down or calling out AC/DC songs. The only two people there for the show were these two kids who wanted an interview for their zine. We actually played a good show and afterwards the bartender stuffed us full of pretty good bar food and diet pills. Hung out with a pro-wrestler and heard stories about the regional wrestling scene. We left at 3am for Norman.
C - gosh, i almost don’t remember this show. i must’ve blocked it out or something. but i do remember talking to the wrestler who was nice and the bartender kept giving us food that’s bad for you. we ate it all anyway.
