Chevy Heston 1986-1998

tour 6.06

Thursday, November 7 1997 Norman OK Tip’s w/The Aerialists

Zeph - Rehearsed a little in the afternoon with Todd Yeagar on bass and me on drums and did the show that way. It was one one of our best. We had a show booked 1300 miles away in West Virginia the next night but we canceled it. We left for Boston early Friday evening but the van died on the highway in the middle of the night about an hour and a half past Tulsa. The road was totally dead. It took me about an hour to flag down a truck who cb’d the state cops and then about another hour for them to get there. The tow truck showed up quickly after it was called and it was a pretty decent guy with his son with him. He towed us west on the east-bound side back to Claremore where we stayed the night and got the alternator replaced the next day. Luckily we had money from the Norman show. We drove 33 hours straight back to Boston.

Todd - Every time Chevy came into town, they had a different bass player, and for this tour I think they were using a drum machine and Zeph was playing bass. So I was super excited when Matt called me and asked me to play with them at the show in Norman. I had heard the all the songs a thousand times so it didn’t take long to learn them. I think they even let me pick some of my favorites. I know I requested Telephone Punch Machine and That’s What Drugs are For. We practiced at my house and then played the show. I think we played the first side of Destroy, a couple from the second side including the song Destroy and a couple of sections of Come to Sterilized. I don’t remember much about the crowd, but I was a huge Chevy fan and it was awesome to be playing those songs with Matt, Zeph, and Carol.

Carol - these two wacky girls showed up at Dan and Todd’s. they said they were with a group that was traveling cross country in a van selling magazines door to door. dan was caller id’ing every call cuz several collection agencies are trying to get in touch with him. these girls showed up and at first they wanted to get Dan and Todd to subscribe but then soon they were sitting on their couch drinking their beer and pleading dan to call the cops on them for harrassment and suspicious behavior cuz they didn’t want to “work” any more. and i guess if they get arrested then they don’t get into trouble. it sounded like a cult, a magazine cult. so dan did call the police but they never showed up. so he had to call again. this time the girls didn’t come back so i guess they’ve been safely arrested. and i thought touring in a band was weird. Dan made us pasta dinner. they live in a different house now. the show was pretty good compared to our other shows on this tour. Todd played the bass and Zeph played the drums.

C- “trading places” was on tv. no matter how many timew you’ve seen this movie, you always get sucked into it. we canceled our morgantown show.

C - we were not necessarily looking forward to this long journey back home but we knew we had to do it. said good-bye to Dan and Todd. Todd made arrangements to come up to boston and play with us for our tt’s show. we’ve been on the road for about 6 hours on this over 30 hour trip and the van fuckin’ died on us in the middle of nowhere and in pitch darkness. i thought we were gonna get squashed to death cuz there were nothing but monster trucks on this narrow 2-lane highway. it was a dreadful situation. a fuckin’ jerk truck driver even pulled the slow-down-and-drive-away trick on us. there was not much movement on the highway and the ones who saw us didn’t want to help us. finally a truck stopped but on the other side of the highway, so Zeph actually walked across to see what’s up in total darkness. he turned out to be a legitimate nice guy and told us that he’d cb the state troopers for us. it was another hour till the cops showed up and the tow truck came soon after them. the tow truck driver was nice and he had his 7th grader son with him. i felt much better inside the tow truck though our van was paralyzed. he had some classic rock station on and it was aerosmith or stone temple pilots. he dropped us off at some unknown motel. this town was called claremore. it was so late but we got our computer out and played risk.

C - this shit could not have happened at a more inconvenient time. This being the weekend, no repair shop was open. the weather was dreary. we were situated in the outskirts of clarmore and so there was nothing around but a 7-11. we ate cup ‘o noodles and chips. the motel lady took pity on me and gave me hot water and a plastic fork for my noodles. we watched “alice doesn’t live here anymore” on hbo, a sad movie. played risk.

Monday, November 11 1997

C - “independence day” was on. “trading places” was on again. the van was taken to a shop and was fixed in time for us to leave during the simpsons. we drove non-stop and made back to boston in record time. there were 74 messages on the machine when Matt and i got home, most of them hang-ups.
