Chevy Heston 1986-1998

tour 2.01

Sunday, March 10 1996 San Diego CA Velvet

Matt - This time we had Carol with us playing keyboards. We had missed a gig set up in Los Angeles the day before, because we got a late start leaving San Francisco and our set time was really early, at like 6pm. At this point we really had no place to go. We decided to drive down to San Diego and possibly hook up with a friend the next day. Winston was driving and when we got to San Diego, he was trying to get to the beach and ended up at the Navy’s submarine base. We found a beach and there were people sitting around fires drinking and doing drugs, but we just slept in the van and on the beach. The morning was so fucking hot.

Zeph - After the show we stayed with our friend Jenn and the next day she took us out to the desert in her Jeep and it was beautiful. We got stoned and just moments later got stopped by border patrol and they hassled Carol cause she’s not a citizen but let her go cuz she’s not Mexican either.

Monday, March 11 1996 Tucson AZ Cafe Luna Loca

M - All ages venue, alternative space, this woman working there kept giving us dirty looks. There were only four people there. But afterwards we went to a community radio station and played a few of our songs. And did a few PSA’s. I pronounced Celtic “sell-tick” and they laughed at me. Really, I was very drunk on wine.

Z - We all slept in this one little living room with a lumpy, uneven floor like a cave. Winston and I stayed up and watched Forrest Gump with the sound down low.

Wednesday, March 13 1996 El Paso TX the Attic

Z - We were listed in the local paper as being part of the SXSW showcase that these other bands on the bill were a part of. We had seen this band Idiot Flesh the night before in Tucson and we had hated them so much that I stole their traveling sound guy’s free burrito from the club’s kitchen. This Idiot Flesh and the other bands were all so geared up about SXSW. We thought for a second that maybe the connection to this big rock-biz event might actually turn this into a decent night in El Paso but it didn’t. We talked to a ton of kids who never returned to see us again. We got two or three of their addresses.

Thursday, March 14 1996 Interstate 20

Carol - 120 miles away from Dallas. now we are completely stranded in the middle of nowhere. our van died soon after we passed Abilene. Zeph & Winston went to find a phone and the rest of us are sitting and waiting for some sign of hope. they’ve been gone for a while. it’s fuckin hot here. just a little after 2pm. The sun is too much. scorching hot. I’m so dehydrated and hungry. we played in El Paso last night. so this is Texas. we are on our way to Memphis and have been driving since late last night. still not even half way there. we are lucky we don’t have a show tonight. where are the fuckin cops when you really need them. the tour’s been strange. i haven’t been feeling too hot physically since the first day of the tour. so maybe that’s why i feel like touring isn’t all that great. i was in so much pain when i woke up this morning around 6. took a codeine and slept all through the drive and now this. so far my Texas experience has been big, hot, dry & flat. yesterday we hung out at a truck stop in Mesilla, New Mexico all day before we drove to El Paso to do our show. it was a lot more fun than sitting in the van under this mean sun waiting for a police car to pull up and help us get out of this miserable fuckin place.
