Thursday, December 12 1996 Cambridge MA Middle East downstairs w/ Julianna Hatfield
Zeph - Mikey Welsh had just joined the Julianna Hatfield band and he and Todd Phillips harassed practically everyone involved to get us put on this show. We played poorly. The new line-up really wasn’t coming together.
Matt - Up near the front of the stage, it seemed like we played alright. Playing to a large crowd is fun. Although it wasn’t ours.
Carol - after the show, a man approached me and wanted to introduce me to his blind friend. it was very awkard. the show was ok for us. the little kids really liked juliana though.
Saturday, December 14 1996 Morgantown WV Nyabinghi
Z - This was supposed to be part of a small set of shows in the mid-west but the rest of them fell through and since we loved the Nyabinghi so much we decided to make the 14 hour drive just to play this one show. Greg neglected to tell me that finals week had just ended and the town was dead. A couple kids from the college station came out and a few regulars but that was it. Bobby Lane played his usual and we got all fucked-up with Greg and everyone. I played pool for money for the first time, against JP. I used a regular cue and he used an aluminum baseball bat. I lost when I scratched on the 8 and it cost the band ten bucks.
Sunday, December 29 1996 Boston MA Mama Kin
Z - I don’t remember much but there was a decent turnout and later people said it was a good set but I didn’t think so. We had equipment trouble.
C- a fun show. a good number of people showed up. Red Eye 9 opened for us.
Wednesday, January 8 1997 New York NY
CBGB’s
Z - I don’t remember much about these one-off shows with Aaron and Andre. I don’t remember any of them being very good. Wednesday at CB’s. I’m sure this was no exception.
C- when we got to the practice space we found out that we’ve been locked out. Dez the practice space boss, changed the lock on us cuz the other band in our space, Viejo, were late on rent. the loser security guard was no help. so we go over to aaron’s and call dez and Viejo boys. to make the long story short, we got held over for like 2 hours holding our breath for dez to give the locksmith a go-ahead to get a copy made for us. we didn’t leave boston till 5. that girl catherine came with us. we played with some horrible bands as usual. it was our best show in ny though. ben lazar from EMI came to see us and liked us. a girl came up to me and said that she was a big fan. apparently she just moved here from OK and knew all about us. a pretty black girl came up to me and told me she liked us. in the bathroom a girl peeped at me while i was peeing in and i was too fucked up to notice at first.
M- When I see a chance that a gig might be canceled, I often get excited that I don’t have to play another crappy show. But this time was a false alarm. We drove home after the show, which is always nice.
Saturday, January 11 1997 Boston MA the Rat
C- the early all ages show was still goin on when i got there. no one from the band was there yet. went home after soundcheck w/ matt, zeph and kathryn. Galveston, Cherry 2000, I am Japan, and us. all in all it was a strange night. we played ok. it was a battle of personalities. we played last and went home. matt told me andré was drinking.
