tour 5.11
Wednesday, July 9 1997 Minneapolis MN 7th Street
Carol - i wasn’t too thrilled to come back to this place but here we are. Todd knew the girl from the other band from way back and it was weird. he was also good friends with Nick the soundman. the other boys went over to 11th street to see matthew sweet. Todd knew the bass player or something. this show kinda sucked. we went over to Nick’s house afterwards. we stayed up and hung out with nick’s wife and roommmate and went to sleep in the basement. Zeph - Terrible. We were bad. We stayed with Nick and his girlfriend who are a lot of fun and had a good breakfast with them the next day but this is the last time we’ll be in Minneapolis for a long time. Me and the promoter Pat Waylan got scolded by the the club owner when we got paid. Pat’s a cool guy who seems to know what’s up and he really digs us but he can’t make it happen so we’re done with this town for now.
Thursday, July 10 1997 Madison WI O’Cayz
C - i woke up and was kinda homesick. there was this old movie with matt dillon on tv. what is it called? young foxes or something. god, i can’t remember. anyway, it was pretty good and i wanted to stay and watch but we were going out for brunch. i had a tuna melt and it was ok. we said good-bye to nick and the gang and headed to madison. it was a beautiful day. we found Matt’s clay dough and went crazy with it. Zeph made this pussy that was so realistic to the point of being disturbing. i came up with the idea to make a giant cock for Greg for his birthday and Zeph went to work right away. it was done by the time we arrived in madison. Brian was there this time. i had never met him before but heard so much about this dude that i felt like i knew him. he was really sweet like everyone said he was. i was so hungry and we had nothing and Brian gave me his dinner cuz he wasn’t that hungry. it was ziti with pesto that Nicole made and it was sooooo good. he gave us all pachinko t-shirts. we played like a really great set and it ended up on tape. the show was packed and it was a lot of fun. we stayed there late gettin so fucked up and goofing off with the cock replica.
Live at O'Kayz
Starts in about the middle of this set. The tape is a little damaged at first. From the soundboard.
Z - We left Minneapolis and headed south. We went out to a big breakfast with Nick but we really couldn’t afford it so after we bought a carton of generic smokes we split the rest of the cash and each of us had 2 dollars for food for the rest of the day until hopefully O’Cayz would feed us. We were all in a bad mood and Mikey pulled out a package of sculpey that was on the floor and I knew immediately that he was going to make a dick out of it so I told him that and took some to make one to challenge him. Mine was much better and eventually all the clay was placed in my hands for the enormous cock construction. Carol rolled up tiny little strands for the veins and put them all over it. It got everyone in a good mood like a magic totem. When we got to the club the van’s odometer hit 225,000 miles precisely as we stopped at the front door. We were already feeling ridiculous and ready to let off steam. We taped about 15 minutes of the show and it sounds fantastic. Playing everything at nearly twice the speed. We got our 150 bucks which at this point, with the end in sight, was a lot. Left right after the show again and I drove the entire way to Kalamazoo.
Friday, July 11 1997 Kalamazoo MI Harvey’s Z - This show was arranged by our friend Kathryn from Kalamazoo who moved to Boston and had come out with Matt and Carol and Mikey on their way to Chicago at the beginning of the tour and would now be riding back to Boston with us. We stayed at her wealthy dermatologist father’s estate on a lake where we rode jet-skis. Aaron’s sunglasses had still been in the van since he last played with us and I took them out and was wearing them and lost them in the lake. I promised him I’d find them someday. The show was one of the worst I’ve ever been a part of. I was sunburned and fatigued and nauseous. The opening band stole some of my hardware. This place was a sports bar and the crowd sucked and I played poorly. We got paid 204 dollars which was the most on the entire tour and since there was only one show left before we headed home, we divided the cash amongst the five of us.
C - we arrived at Kathryn’s parents’ at 6 or 7 in the morning. Kathryn took the boys to starbucks and i crashed with Matt. woke up, took a shower and saw everyone hanging out in the backyard by the lake. Kathryn’s sisters were home and their friends were there also shooting pool and stuff. Kathryn gave me panties she bought but didn’t fit her and a new t-shirt for burning a hole in my club med tank top in chicago. i got Matt up and he was cranky. we spent the day lounging around and jet skiing and it felt like a vacation, only with Kathryn’s family. Matt and i drove to this drive through fish ‘n chips joint. there are lots of little and big lakes around here which is cute. our show that Kathryn got us at the last minute was at this really gross sports bar and this girl with a rhodes piano did a little tori amos set before us and we all felt like we were gonna throw up just from being there. our set went over ok and they paid us pretty well and Kathryn took all the credit for us having a little bit of money. went back to Kathryn’s and this girl came with us. Mikie and Kathryn disappeared into the bathroom and by the end of the night Todd had disappeared with that girl that came from nowhere. one more show and we are done.
