Chevy Heston 1986-1998

tour 6.01

Sunday, October 19  1997 - Allston MA O’Brien’s

Carol - this time it’s just me, matt, zeph and Matt’s trusty macintosh 6100. we tested out this new ensemble for the very first time before we hit the road. our show at O’Briens was awful. we should’ve taken this as an ominous sign if we were sane people. instead we just marched right into the disaster area. after the show we went to Adam b’s house to pick up Simon. Simon will be with us till seattle. he’s moving out of boston. so he’s just there for the ride. Zeph and i met him for the first time tonight. Matt wants me to stand in the center with my korg. Zeph has now abandoned his drums for a bass for this tour and we are all singing now. and joey, our computer is providing the back beat. we have no idea what awaits us.

Zeph - Now it was just Carol, Matt and me. We were using a drum machine and Matt’s computer and I was playing bass.  We had been triple booked for this night, at O’Briens, Jacques’ and Mama Kin. We went to Mama Kin first but it just looked like such a depressing scene that we only brought about half the gear in before we decided to leave and go over to O’Briens. The show was a real disaster anyway. We sound checked right before we played and that took longer than the show did. We blew up my stereo speakers trying to run the drum programs through them. My first time playing bass in front of an audience and I got nervous and it was bad. After the show Matt introduced me to Simon who was getting a ride with us out to Seattle and we hit the road.

Monday, October 20  1997 Kalamazoo MI Club Soda

C - from boston to kalamazoo, michigan is a long way. but we are so used to these crazy drives by now. as we were unloading, someone yelled out my name and when i turned around, it was Roman, our old bass player and my pal from the art school days. i was so happy to see him. we knew he lived in michigan but really didn’t expect to see him here tonight. ahh, it was so cool to see him! he brought us smokes, camel lights for me, marlboro reds for Matt, and camel filters for Zeph, and a copy of Q. so fuckin’ sweet! he  came with a girl and she was nice. luckily our sound was much better than last night’s. the band that played before us were a costume band and they ran around getting their wigs and outfits on in the backstage. maybe they were good. I’m not sure. Roman’s friend, Alex invited us over to her place to crash. we hung out, catching up and reminiscing till we fell asleep. Alex had a little boy.

Z - The sound guy also worked for a local industrial band so he was equipped somewhat to deal with us. Roman, our old bass player had driven in from Holland MI with a friend of his. We had the computer in the middle of the stage on a big table with all the other shit. Ran the programs through the PA and it was better. Played with Señor Cummypants. Their drummer was sitting on a toilet, dressed in an old pressure suit. Their singer was the original geek. He jumped off the stage and was trying to act crazy but Roman instantly ran at him, picked him up over his shoulder and and started running around and spinning him. The kid was into it and just kept holding the mike up to his face still singing. Afterwards we drove out to Holland with Roman and his friend, and we stayed at her house. The next day we went to the Salvation Army and the record store Roman worked at. They bought CD’s from us and Roman gave me an Ornette Coleman disc.
